Late Goal Lifts Goucher Past Women's Lacrosse

TOWSON, MD — Muffie Bliss scored an unassisted goal with 2:28 remaining to lift host Goucher College to a hard-fought 13-12 win over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon at Gopher Stadium.

The Bobcats (4-5) trailed, 10-5, with 24:26 to play before mounting a furious comeback and forging a 12-12 tie.

Freshman Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County) began the outburst by sandwiching a pair of goals around a tally by freshman Caitlin Howley (Damascus, Md./Damascus) to bring FSU to within two, 10-8, with 17:29 left.

The Gophers (6-6) opened an 11-8 lead at the 14:20 mark, but Macey answered just one minute later to pull the Bobcats back to within two.

Goucher restored its three-goal lead on a Saburah Posner tally at the 13:20 mark before FSU scored four of the next five goals.

Freshman Melissa Tomko (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) tallied back-to-back goals just 1:10 apart, and junior Andrea Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) completed the Bobcat rally by finding the net with an unassisted goal with exactly 6:00 remaining.

However, Bliss salvaged the Gopher victory with her second game-winning goal of the season.

Frostburg State opened the back-and-forth affair with a pair of quick strikes to take a 2-0 lead. Duffy scored with an assist from Macey 6:00 into the contest, and Macey notched the first of her four goals on the day 1:31 later.

Goucher scored twice over the next four minutes to forge a 2-2 tie before Duffy fired a shot in at the 18:06 mark to give FSU a 3-2 advantage.

The Gophers scored the next two goals to take a 4-3 lead, but Duffy answered with a tally at the 11:46 mark to tie the game again. However, Goucher outscored FSU, 4-1, in the final 10:44 of the first half to take an 8-5 lead at the break.

The hosts opened their biggest lead of the afternoon, 10-5, with a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart to begin the second stanza before withstanding the Bobcat rally.

Duffy and Macey led FSU with four goals and an assist apiece, while Howley and Tomko each found the net twice. Freshman Courtney Bayless (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) added an assist.

Sophomore Sarah Shockley (Fallston, Md./Fallston) made 21 saves in the loss.

Frostburg State will look to snap its three-game losing skid when it hosts Bridgewater (Va.) College on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
