Math Students Tutor at Route 40 Elementary School

Frostburg State University math students, in conjunction with the University’s Read to Succeed Program, have been helping youngsters fine tune their math skills at Route 40 Elementary School, outside of Frostburg.

The program, dubbed “Mathletics,” was launched last spring and originally served as a one-on-one tutoring program that took place at the University Lewis J. Ort Library. Today, the program has expanded to include St. Michael’s after-school program, as well as Route 40.

Under the direction of FSU math students, fourth and fifth grade students participate in math activities such as multiplication hop scotch and bingo, measuring trees, estimating M & M’s, creating pictures with angles and measured shapes and calculating time averages from relay races.

The program, which is headed up by FSU’s Lori Senese and Rhonda Schwinabart, allows FSU Mathletics tutors to participate in the program through a service learning option in “Math 206: Math for Elementary Teachers,” taught by Dr. Gerry Wojnar and Linda Armentrout.

“It’s a wonderful way for our university students to gain valuable real life experience while helping kids in our community improve their skills and attitudes toward math,” says Lori Senese, who coordinates tutor placement in the program.

“It has been an invaluable experience for our kids to associate with the college students,” states Chris Baker, math teacher at Rout 40. “It really gave them a chance to be excited about math.”
