Men Split, Women Swept in Swimming & Diving Tri-Meet with Grove City and West Virginia Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, MD — The Frostburg State swimming & diving teams faced tough competition Saturday in a tri-meet with visiting Grove City and Division II West Virginia Wesleyan.

The men defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (122-107) but fell to Grove City (141-96), while the women lost to both Grove City (166-72) and West Virginia Wesleyan (144-79).

The Grove City swept West Virginia Wesleyan, with the men posting a 128-94 win and the women adding a 118-109 victory.

The FSU men were led by sophomore Chris Williams (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College). Williams captured the 50-meter freestyle (25.18) and added to the win in the 400-meter freestyle relay with teammates freshman Kevin Hoffman (South River/Crofton, Md.) and seniors Ryan Kentrus (Patuxent/Lusby, Md.) and Brian Flynn (Shaepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) with a time of 3:50.57.

Senior Randy Belt (Patuxent/Upper Marlboro, Md.) won the three-meter diving event with a score of 165.40.

Senior Jeff Cameron (Mt. St. Joseph/Columbia, Md.) posted season-best times in both the 100-meter butterfly and the 100-meter backstroke, while freshman Ross Herman (North Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) recorded season-bests in the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke.

Sophomore C.C. Williams (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) had season-best swims in both the 200 and 400-meter freestyle.

Winning for the Bobcat women was junior Audrey Shipe (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.), who captured the three-meter diving evnt with a score of 167.10.

Juniors Melody Hanna (Frostburg, Md./Beall) and Ashley Hedges (Thomas Johnson/Frederick, Md.) had season-best times in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle, while junior Kim Kaiser (Severna Park/Severna Park, Md.) saw her season best in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke.

"The swimmers and divers both gave a great display today," said head coach Troy Strieby. "Even with the tough competition, they managed to produce 23 season-best times and produce great results in diving."

The Bobcats return to action when they face host Randolph-Macon November 22 at 2 p.m.
