Men's Basketball Edges Penn State Behrend in Key AMCC Battle

FROSTBURG, MD — Junior Victor Arana (Aberdeen, Md./Ellison, Texas (Harford CC)) hit the go-ahead jumper with 2:04 left and Frostburg State held Penn State Behrend without a shot on its final possession as time ran out to claim a hard-fought 61-59 win Friday night at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats won for the ninth time in their last 11 outings to improve to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, while the Lions had their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the league.

Frostburg State held a 54-49 lead with 6:24 left but Penn State Behrend scored seven straight points to take a 56-54 edge with 3:28 to play.

Red-shirt freshman Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) drained the last of his five three-pointers on the night to put the Bobcats ahead by one before Doug Merski hit one-of-two free throws to forge a 57-57 deadlock at the 3:00 mark.

Junior Jason Peterson (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen (Harford CC)) then blocked a Behrend shot and forced a tie-up with the possession arrow in favor of the Bobcats.

Arana then sank a jumper off a feed from junior Steve Coursey (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) to put FSU ahead, and Coursey followed with a steal and layup to give the Bobcats a 61-57 lead with 1:27 to go.

Jared Clough made a layup with 1:01 left to pull the Lions to within two and then pulled down the rebound of a missed three-pointer by Peterson to give his squad one final chance.

Peterson then applied heavy pressure to Tom Lulich, who was unable to get a shot off as time expired.

The Bobcats missed their first four shots and committed three turnovers in falling behind 7-0 after the opening five minutes of the game before climbing back behind a 16-4 run over the next six minutes.

Owen sandwiched three-pointers around a jumper by red-shirt junior Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Bishop Sullivan) to bring FSU to within 11-10 at the 13:21 mark, and baskets by Rosenthal, Owen and Coursey made it a 16-11 game with 8:59 left in the first half.

Penn State Behrend eventually tied it at 18 on a pair of free throws by Clough at the 5:58 mark, and the game was deadlocked two more times before the Bobcats closed out the half with a 10-2 run.

Owen drained a three-pointer, Arana hit a jumper and junior Daniel Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) sank two free throws before Owen closed out the scoring with his fourth three-pointer of the half to give FSU a 32-24 advantage at the break.

Owen finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a 5-of-6 effort from three-point land. Rosenthal added nine points, while Peterson had eight points and eight rebounds.

Clough led Penn State Behrend with a game-high 19 points and also pulled down eight rebounds. Kevin Buczynski added 11 points.

Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Pitt-Bradford in another key AMCC battle beginning at 6 pm.
