Men's Basketball Falls to IUP in Championship of FSU Tip-Off Tournament

FROSTBURG, MD — Senior Keenan Holmes scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Division II Indiana (Pa.) to a 93-76 win over host Frostburg State in the championship game of the Bobcat Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

Holmes, who had 19 points and eight boards in Friday night's 73-63 win over Neumann, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

IUP sophomore Eric Castorina, FSU sophomore Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Catholic (Va.)), Waynesburg senior Mike Pamepinto and Neumann senior Rahim Washington were also voted to the All-Tournament Team.

IUP (2-0), which advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight last season, held a slight 28-24 advantage over the Bobcats midway through the first half before pulling away. Holmes sparked a 20-5 run over the next six minutes with eight points as the Indians took a 52-42 lead at the half.

The visitors continued to control the pace in the second stanza and led by as many as 19 on several occasions, the last at 73-54 with 12:01 to play.

Frostburg State (1-1) closed to within 11 on a pair of free throws by junior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) with 7:47 left in the game, but Castorina hit two free throws and Holmes sank a pair of jumpers to keep the Bobcats at bay.

Small, a transfer from Cecil Community College, led FSU with 21 points in just his second game as a Bobcat and four steals.

FSU played tough early on, taking a 12-11 lead on a layup by junior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) at 15:35, but IUP used a 13-1 spurt to open a 24-13 bulge. The Bobcats countered with an 11-4 run to close to within four before the Indians pulled away behind Holmes.

Bobcat senior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Einstein) scored 17 points, while Rosenthal added 12 points and five rebounds to finish the tournament with a combined 33 points and 14 caroms.

Grabill had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists for the Bobcats, who hit just 5-of-16 three-point attempts after sinking 15-of-34 in Friday night's 88-77 win over Waynesburg.

Castorina and Felix Davila each had 13 points for IUP, which shot 54.8 (34-of-62) from the field. Travis Eisentrout added 12 points.

Frostburg State returns to action on November 30 when it visits Muskinghum at 2:00 pm.
