Men's Basketball Falls to Penn State Behrend

ERIE, PA — Senior James Curren scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to help lead Penn State Behrend to a 57-46 win over Frostburg State in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday at the Junker Center.

The Lions won their fifth in a row to improve to 12-1 overall and 4-0 AMCC, while the Bobcats dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Frostburg State took a 23-19 halftime lead after hitting 10-of-25 (40 percent) shots from the field.

Penn State Behrend shot just 6-of-26 (23.1) in the opening frame.

The tide turned in the second half, as the Lions hit 14-of-21 (66.7) from the floor, while the Bobcats were just 9-of-31 (29.0).

Curren, who was just 2-for-4 from the field in the first 20 minutes, hit 8 of 11 shots after halftime to lead Penn State Behrend's rally.

His layup with 14:23 to play snapped a 27-27 tie and put his team ahead for good, and he scored all 10 of his team's points in a key 10-5 stretch that gave Behrend a 47-37 cushion with 4:24 remaining.

The Bobcats took a 27-21 lead in the opening moments of the second half thanks to a jumper by sophomore Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall), but Justin Jennings and Casey Ponsoll sank back-to-back three-pointers to pull the Lions even.

Jared Clough sank two free throws to give Behrend a 37-32 advantage, and Curren, who also had 10 rebounds, then took over by scoring his team's next 10 points in the next 4:27.

Ryley scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double, but no other Bobcat scored in double digits.

The Bobcats return to action Wednesday when they visit Penn State Altoona in another AMCC contest at 8:00 pm.
