Men's Basketball Falls to Waynesburg Despite Dorsey's Career Night

WAYNESBURG, PA — Frostburg State freshman T.J. Dorsey (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley) set career-highs with 19 points and 12 rebounds, but Waynesburg erased an 11-point second-half deficit and rallied for an 83-73 win over the Bobcats Monday night at the Marisa Fieldhouse.

Dorsey scored 12 of his points in the first half to help Frostburg State to a 43-35 lead at the intermission.

The Bobcats shot 16-of-36 (44.4) from the field in the opening stanza, including 9-of-16 from three-point range, while Waynesburg hit 11-of-35 (31.4) from the floor.

However, the Yellow Jackets improved in the second half, hitting 16-of-34 (47.1) from the floor compared to FSU's 10-of-28 (35.7) performance, including 1-of-9 from behind the arc.

FSU (6-12) took a 50-39 lead early in the second half as Dorsey drilled one of his career-high five three-pointers, but Waynesburg used a 13-2 run to pull to within two, 54-52.

Sophomore Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) scored five straight points to give the Bobcats a 59-52 advantage before the hosts made another charge, closing the gap to just 63-61 with 7:57 to play.

Waynesburg (11-6), which dropped an 88-77 decision to the Bobcats in the teams' season-opener, moved in front, 64-63, on a three-pointer by Mike Pamepinto with 6:43 left, but Dorsey countered with a jumper to give FSU a one-point edge.

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead for good on their next possession as Jake Marcoux's jumper gave WC a 66-65 advantage, and the hosts created some breathing room with an 11-4 run over the next four minutes.

Waynesburg then sealed the victory by sinking 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the closing moments.

The Bobcats came out hot to open the contest, quickly building an 11-2 lead behind two three-pointers from Dorsey and a three-pointer and jumper by senior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster).

The hosts answered with an 8-2 spurt to pull to within 13-10, but junior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) scored seven straight points in a 10-2 Bobcat run that gave the visitors a 23-12 cushion.

Waynesburg senior Ray Robinson's three-pointer at the 7:16 mark cut FSU's lead to 26-24 before the Bobcats pushed their advantage back to double-digits with strong shooting from behind the arc.

Grabill, Dorsey and Ernst each connected from long distance to spark a 13-4 surge that gave FSU a 39-28 lead with 2:31 left in the half.

Grabill finished with 14 points and eight assists, while Bowery and Vaughn finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Robinson led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 26 points, while Aaron Ankrom added 20. Pamepinto poured in 14 points, and Marcoux finished with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Frostburg State, which has lost four in a row, will host Bethany (W.Va.) on Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
