Men's Basketball Holds Off Waynesburg in Season-Opener

FROSTBURG, MD - Senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored a team-high 16 points and junior Jocara Knight (Laurel, Md./Laurel) had 10 points and 12 rebounds in his Frostburg State debut to lead the host Bobcats to a 79-74 win over Waynesburg in the Frostburg State Tip-Off Tournament Friday night at Bobcat Arena.

Frostburg State (1-0) will face Bridgewater, an 88-79 winner over Salisbury in Friday's earlier game, in the championship game Saturday at 4.

Waynesburg will take on Salisbury in the consolation game at 2.

The Bobcats held a tense 59-56 lead with 6:42 remaining and created some breathing room on a lay-up by Small and a three-pointer by Knight.

However, the Yellow Jackets closed to within three, 69-66, on a jumper by freshman Beau Wilson with 4:02 left.

Knight came through with more big plays, grabbing a defensive rebound and hitting a basket before pulling down another Waynesburg miss that led to a lay-up by sophomore Steve Coursey (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) that gave the Bobcats a 73-66 advantage with 2:19 to go.

The Yellow Jackets would not go quietly, however, using back-to-back three-pointers from senior Mike King and Wilson to pull to within one 75-74 with 49 seconds left.

Coursey made one of two free throws and senior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) sealed the win by hitting three-of-four shots from the stripe in the final 17 seconds.

Frostburg State looked like it would have little problem with a youthful Waynesburg team featuring 13 freshmen under first-year head coach Frank Ferraro.

The Bobcats jumped out to an 18-4 lead in the first 9:57 behind Knight, who scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in the spurt.

However, the Yellow Jackets fought their way back, using a 20-6 run to forge a 24-24 tie. Waynesburg scored seven straight to close to within 22-19 before junior Nick Tomsko later nailed a three-pointer to bring his squad even.

Coursey sank a jumper to put FSU ahead 26-24, but King answered with a three-pointer and sophomore Ryan Bujnowski followed with a lay-up to put Waynesburg back in front 29-26.

FSU junior David Quay, Jr. (Lewiston, Pa./Indian Valley), who transferred from Waynesburg this year, then took over, sinking back-to-back lay-ups, grabbing a rebound and assisting on another basket as the Bobcats took the lead again, 32-29.

A Coursey lay-up gave FSU a 34-29 advantage before freshman Jeff Nero hit a jumper to bring the Yellow Jackets to within 34-31 at halftime.

Coursey finished with nine points and eight assists, while Quay added eight points and six rebounds. Junior Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) also scored eight points.

King led Waynesburg with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-23 shooting, while junior Ray Gillespie added 14 points.
