Men's Basketball Rallies Past Pitt-Greensburg in Battle of Bobcats

FROSTBURG, MD — Junior Robert Jones (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly (Prince Georges CC)) sank a go-ahead jumper with 1:33 remaining, and senior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./North County) hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 34 seconds as Frostburg State rallied for a 71-67 win over Pitt-Greensburg in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.

Frostburg State (6-6, 2-0 AMCC), which snapped a season-high three-game losing streak, battled UPG to a 13-13 tie in the opening eight minutes of play before the visiting Bobcats went on a 13-3 spurt to open a 26-16 bulge with 6:30 left in the first half.

FSU slowly chipped away at its deficit, and junior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) closed out the half with a resounding dunk off an inbounds play to pull Frostburg State to within four, 33-29, at the break.

Pitt-Greensburg continued to hold the hosts at bay through the next 10 minutes of action, however, allowing FSU to come to within a point three times and clinging to a 42-41 edge with 14:07 left.

Garrett Treese then hit two free throws and a layup to move UPG ahead, 46-41, but Bowery drained a three-pointer to keep FSU within a basket. But, Pitt-Greensburg built a pair of seven-point leads, the second a 58-51 advantage with 10:43 remaining.

FSU rallied to tie the game with a 7-0 run capped by sophomore Mike Hall's (Herndon, Va./Oakton) jumper, but again UPG held and opened a 64-60 edge on a three-pointer from Scott Winfrey.

Jones then sank a pair of free throws to forge a 64-64 tie, and Bowery sank two more shots from the charity stripe with 3:23 left to put FSU ahead 66-65, its first lead since a 3-2 edge less than three minutes into the game.

Kevin Conlon's jumper along the baseline put UPG back in front, 67-66, with 1:56 to go, before Jones put FSU ahead for good with his clutch shot.

Pitt-Greensburg committed three crucial turnovers in the closing 57 seconds as Frostburg State escaped with the narrow victory.

Junior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster (Edison CC)) added 11 points, while Jones finished with 10 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.

Brown added nine points and eight assists but saw his nine-game double-digit scoring streak come to an end.

Scott Winfrey led UPG with 14 points, while Conlon finished with 13 points.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday when it visits Penn State Behrend in another AMCC contest at 4 p.m.
