Men's Basketball Receives CBOA Sportsmanship Award

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Frostburg State University men’s basketball team and Head Coach Webb Hatch were recently named recipients of the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (CBOA) 2003-2004 Schoenfield Sportsmanship Award.

Sam Schoenfield, a former college basketball standout who possessed a great deal of energy, impeccable honesty and a charismatic personality, was one of the CBOA's founding fathers. Sam espoused integrity and strong character, which set him apart from most men.

A brief illness took Sam's life in 1956 and as a result CBOA decided to memorialize Sam through an award that would be annually presented to a person who exemplified the principles and characteristics so prominently displayed by Sam Schoenfield.

Accordingly, the award is presented to the college or university which, in the judgement of the CBOA membership, best exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."

"We are honored and flattered to receive this award," said Hatch. "Anytime you are recognized by your peers, whether it be officials or fellow coaches, it is rewarding. We try to do things the right way with our basketball program at FSU. This is a nice way of validating that we are in fact doing that."

FSU finished 15-13 overall in 2003-2004, its their third winning season in the past four years. FSU ended its season with a 44-42 overtime loss to La Roche College in the AMCC Tournament championship game.

The Bobcats begin practice October 15 and open their season November 19 against Johns Hopkins in the first round of the Blue Jay Invitational Tournament at Johns Hopkins.
