Men's Basketball Slips Past Hood in Pride of Maryland Tournament

STEVENSON, MD — Senior Daniel Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) and sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) combined for 40 points to lead the Frostburg State men’s basketball team to a 65-63 victory over Hood in the Pride of Maryland Tournament Sunday afternoon at Villa Julie.

The Bobcats (2-1) placed fifth in the tournament.

Frostburg State took an early 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of play. The Blazers (1-1) countered with a 10-2 run of its own over the next four minutes to tie the game at 12 apiece with 11:18 left in the first half.

Hood maintained the lead until back-to-back free throw shots by senior Victor Arana (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) tied the game for the second time at 31-31. A three-pointer by Owen put FSU ahead 34-31 at intermission.

In the second half, the Bobcats would lead by as much as seven points. The game was tied for a third time with 10:15 left on the game clock after Jesse Gutekunst netted a free-throw for Hood.

There were two more ties before FSU pulled away to get the win.

Ryley led the team with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Owen added 19 points. Ryley’s performance earned him a place on the All-Tournament team.

The Bobcats return to action Tuesday as they host Waynesburg beginning at 7:30 pm.
