Men's Basketball Slips Past La Roche in Conference Thriller, 69-64

FROSTBURG, MD — Senior Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) and sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) each had a double-double to lead the Frostburg State men’s basketball team to a 69-64 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference La Roche Friday night at Bobcat Arena.

With the win, the Bobcats improved to 9-11 overall and 6-7 in the AMCC, while the Redhawks fell to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in the league.

FSU took an early 4-0 lead off back-to-back jumpers by senior Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) just over one minute into action. A three-pointer by Josh Rulnick tied the game at nine apiece with 14:10 on the clock.

Sopmpmore Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) then sparked an 11-6 Bobcat run by scoring all 11 points, including three baskets from behind the arc, to give the hosts a 24-19 lead just over the eight-minute mark.

Rulnick scored another three-pointer at 6:51 to tie the game at 24-24. The Bobcats found the momentum and went on a 17-3 scoring run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 41-27 lead, with 33 seconds until halftime.

A last-minute layup by Frank Davis pulled the Storm within 41-29 at the half.

After the intermission, La Roche came out and immediately scored six-straight points to close the gap to 41-35. Zack Kostorick found the basket for three points to tie the game at 58-58 with 6:36 on the clock. Approximately two minutes later, a three-pointer and two free throws from McIntyre gave the Bobcats a 63-58 lead.

Rulnick netted a three at the 1:53 mark to come within one, 65-64, before Ryley would close the game with four-straight points to seal the win.

Owen had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while McIntyre netted 11 points and a game-high 14 boards. Hazel led all players with 17 points and Ryley added 13 scores.

The Redhawks were led by Rulnick who had 15 points on 5-of-8 from three-point range. Steve Lucas and Frank added 10 points apiece.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they host conference-leading Lake Erie beginning at 3:05 pm.
