Men's Basketball Uses Long-Range Shooting to Sink Waynesburg in Season Opener

FROSTBURG, MD — Sophomore Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Catholic (Va.)) tied his career-high with 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and senior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Einstein) added 19 points and eight boards to lead Frostburg State to an 88-77 season-opening win over Waynesburg in the FSU Tip-Off Tournament Friday night at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats (1-0) used sharp shooting from behind the three-point line, sinking 15-of-34 treys in the victory. Rosenthal scored 14 of his points, including nine on three straight shots from behind the arc, in a 30-11 run that gave FSU a commanding 80-54 advantage with 9:18 left.

Waynesburg (0-1) held tough through the opening 12 minutes of play, trailing 20-15, before the Bobcats began to pull away. Bowery hit back-to-back jumpers and the Bobcats later sank a trio of three-pointers to build a 37-25 lead.

FSU held a 45-30 advantage at the break.

The Yellow Jackets closed to within seven, 50-43, in the opening minutes of the second half, but FSU was too much from the outside. Rosenthal nailed another three-pointer to open a 10-0 spurt before hitting his three trifectas on three trips down the floor.

The Bobcats kept their lead close to 20 before both teams cleared their benches down the stretch.

Senior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) added 13 points, while junior Ryan Grabill (Williamsport/Boonsboro, Md.) had eight points and a career-high 11 assists.

Senior Aaron Ankrom led Waynesburg with 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior Ray Robinson added 14 points. The Yellow Jackets hit just 4-of-22 from three-point range.

In the opening game of the tournament, Division II Indiana (Pa.) downed Neumann, 73-63. Keenan Holmes had a game-high 19 points to lead three Indians in double-figures. Dante Baldeh scored 15 points and Ed Peterson added 12.

Rahim Washington led Neumann with 15 points, while Solomon Harris added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Neumann and Waynesburg will play in the consolation game tomorrow at 2:00 pm, and Frostburg State and Indiana (Pa.) will face off for the championship at 4:00 pm.
