Men's Hoops Rallies From 13-Point Deficit in Second Half to Down Grove City

FROSTBURG, MD — Sophomore Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and Frostburg State overcame an early 13-point deficit in the second stanza to post a 75-70 win over Grove City in a non-conference contest Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.

Frostburg State improved to 11-9 overall with its fifth win in its last seven outings, while Grove City had its season-high three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-11.

The Bobcats trailed 46-33 with 16:43 remaining and picked away at their deficit over the next 10 minutes.

Ryley and sophomore Steve Coursey (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) each hit two baskets in a 14-4 run that brought FSU to within 50-47 with 12:06 left, but the Wolverines pushed their lead back to eight, 57-49, behind a 7-2 spurt.

Junior Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) then heated up from three-point range, hitting three shots from behind the arc on three straight Bobcat possessions to forge a 61-61 deadlock with 6:07 left.

Grove City took a 67-63 lead at the 4:29 mark before Ryley hit a short jumper and followed with a thundering dunk along the baseline to bring the Bobcats even again.

Coursey then stole the ball on Grove City's next possession and hit two free throws with 2:39 left to put the Bobcats ahead for the first time since holding a 10-9 lead just five minutes into the game.

Ryley came through again on the Wolverines' ensuing trip down the floor, thwarting the potential game-tying basket with the last of his three blocks on the night, but sophomore Matt Phillips hit a jumper to force a 69-69 tie with 1:20 remaining.

Senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) put FSU on top for good when he hit a short jumper along the baseline with 1:06 left, and Coursey and senior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) each hit a pair of free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the victory.

Coursey finished with a career-high 17 points and added six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Small had 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Grabill posted eight points, seven assists and two rebounds.

The Bobcats return to action this Saturday when they host AMCC front-runner Penn State Behrend at 4:00 pm.

The Lions (17-1, 7-0 AMCC) took a 10-game winning streak into Wednesday night's league contest with Pitt-Bradford and are ranked 22nd in the lastest national poll.
