Men's Soccer Bested by McDaniel in First Round of ECAC Tournament

WESTMINSTER, MD – Frostburg State managed to tie McDaniel early in the second half, but the No. 7 Green Terror scored the final three goals to post a 4-1 victory over the No. 2 Bobcats in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Tournament Wednesday.

McDaniel (14-7-1) was first to score when Thomas Kane headed the ball in off a cross by defender Jerome DeFrancis in the sixth minute.

Just over two minutes into the second half, junior Jon Roth (Magruder/Gaithersburg, Md.) found a wide open net off a crossing pass from freshman Jeff Bisker (Fallston/Fallston, Md.).

In the 54th minute, McDaniel struck again when Trevor Brown found the net to move the Green Terror ahead 2-1. Just over ten minutes later, DavidLong found the net off an assist from Todd Knepper as the Bobcat squad halted play, thinking the ball was offsides.

Knepper capped the scoring on the day when he found the net off an assist from Kane in the 88th minute.

Freshman Tom Sadler (Sandy Spring Friends/Silver Spring, Md.) had five saves in the first half and allowed one goal, while sophomore Bryn Varhol (Bishop O'Connell/Alexandria, Va.) suffered the loss, giving up three goals in the second half.

Green Terror keeper Andrew Wu had five saves on the day, including three second half stops.

McDaniel outshot FSU 13-12 and the Red and Black held a 7-6 edge in corners.

"We had a great year," said head coach Keith Byrnes. "I'm disappointed to see it end this way, but I'm proud of their efforts this year."

The Bobcats finish their season with a 10-7-2 record.
