Men's Soccer Edged by St. Mary’s College

St. Mary’s City, Md – The Frostburg State men’s soccer team lost 2-0 to St. Mary’s College in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary’s junior Mikael Tigrett scored a goal and added an assist, helping the Seahawks gain their first win of the season, improving their record to 1-2, while the Bobcats fall to 1-3.

FSU battled St. Mary’s to a 0-0 draw at haltime; however St. Mary’s sophomore Chris Madrigal scored the game-winning goal with a header into the top right corner, off a corner kick from Tigrett at the 70:42 mark. Tigrett then added an insurance goal at the 75:30 mark off an assist from sophomore forward Ben Gould for the 2-0 final.

Seahawks keeper Rick Besore earned the win and notched fives saves in the contest, while Bobcat keeper Derek Richardson (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) made 11 saves.

St. Mary’s held a 23-16 edge in total shots and a commanding 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

“We worked hard, but we didn’t create enough scoring opportunities,” said FSU head coach Keith Byrnes. “St. Mary’s is a very good team and they capitalized on their chances.”

The Bobcats will return to action on September 13 when they travel to play natioanlly ranked John’s Hopkins. The game is set for a 4:00 pm kickoff.
