Men's Soccer Falls to 20th-Ranked Mary Washington in Overtime Thriller

FROSTBURG, MD - For the second time this season, the Frostburg State men's soccer team took a nationally ranked opponent to the limit. Unfortunately, the Bobcats came up just short again, falling to 20th-ranked Mary Washington, 1-0 in overtime, Sunday afternoon.

Eagle junior Michael Nissim-Sabat scored the game's only goal with 28 seconds left in the first extra session to give the visitors the thrilling victory.

Senior Adrian Burke sent a corner kick towards the goal, and Nissim-Sabat headed the ball just inside the near post to hand the Bobcats the heartbreaking defeat.

Frostburg State (2-3), which nine days ago matched No. 17 Drew University through nearly 100 minutes of scoreless action before the Rangers found the net off a deflection, traded several scoring chanced with Mary Washington throughout regulation.

Bobcat junior R.J. Purnell (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield) just missed in the game's tenth minute, as his blast along the right sideline from 25 yards out hit the crossbar and flew out of play.

Mary Washington goalie Liam Garland kept the Bobcats off the board by punching away a crossing shot less than two minutes into the second half, and both teams had numerous shots roll just wide of the net.

Frostburg State junior Mike Pregnall (Herndon, Va./Oakton) answered by stopping a shot and leaping on the rebound in the goal mouth with 10:10 to play in the second half, and he added a diving deflection of a hard shot just under two minutes later to keep the Eagles at bay.

Mary Washington (5-0) was thwarted again with 5:14 remaining in regulation when Bobcat junior Jon Wieland (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) kicked a loose ball out of the crease and the Eagles' follow up shot sailed over the net.

The Bobcats also came up empty with just 1:40 left in the second half as sophomore Sean Simpson's (Silver Spring, Md./Kennedy) chip shot from eight yards out went right over the net.

The game was a draw everywhere but the scoreboard, with each team taking 14 shots and both goalies making four saves. The Eagles held a slight 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Frostburg State hosts Columbia Union on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
