Men's Soccer Falls to F&M in First Round of ECAC Tournament

LANCASTER, PA — Franklin & Marshall junior midfielder Todd Kehoe scored with 5:36 remaining to lift the Diplomats to a 2-1 win over Frostburg State in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Region Championships Wednesday afternoon at Baker Field.

The No. 3 Diplomats (11-4) advance to Saturday's semifinals and will face host and No. 2 seed Western Maryland. Top-seeded Johns Hopkins University (15-3) will play No. 4 Moravian (13-5-2) in the other semifinal at 2:00 p.m. The Greyhounds knocked off fifth-seeded Grove City, 2-1 in overtime, on Wednesday.

Saturday’s winners will advance to the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Kehoe received a pass from Matt Shapiro at the top of the 18, settled the ball and then sent a shot into the upper right corner of the net from about 12 yards out.

The Bobcats (12-7-1), whose seven losses on the year came by just one goal each, opened the scoring at the 10:27 mark when junior R.J. Purnell (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield) headed in a crossing pass from sophomore Mike Mutchler (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown).

F&M tied the game exactly eight minutes later as senior forward Scott Runyon flicked a pass from freshman Pete Pryzbylkowski into the net while skidding towards Pregnall.

The game remained scoreless until Kehoe’s goal due to the play of Pregnall and Diplomat junior goalie Chris Milano. Pregnall made eight saves, while Milano stopped 15 shots, including a deflection with his foot of a close-range blast by Purnell with the game tied at one.

The Bobcats held a 16-10 edge in shots, while F&M had a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.
