Men’s Tennis Beaten by SUNY Oneonta at Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Frostburg State dropped its contest to SUNY Oneonta 8-1 Sunday in its first match of its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.

The Bobcats (1-2) managed to pull one win together as the team of senior Justin Stephens (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and junior Gary Lyst (Blair/Silver Spring, Md.) bested Lucas Coene and Shawn Goodman at the No. 1 doubles slot, 8-5

At No. 2 doubles, seniors Pete Della-Luna (Longmeadow/Moshpee, Mass.) and Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, Md.) were dismissed by Patrick O'Toole and B.J. Vanderwood, 8-3, while juniors Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick/Frederick, Md.) and Jake Helms (North County/Linthicum, Md.) were downed by Jeremy Essay and Matt Deitch at the third flight, 8-1.

In No. 1 singles action, Stephens was bested in a tough three-setter by O'Toole, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. At the No. 2 spot, Lyst fell to Coene, 6-3, 6-2.

At the third position, Spangenberg was blanked, 6-0, 6-0 by Goodman, while Della Luna was bested by Vanderwood, 6-3, 6-2.

In fifth singles, Robinson was narrowly edged by Essay by a close 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision, while Helms fell to Deitch, 6-0, 6-1.

The Bobcats return to action Monday, March 22, when they take on the University of Southern Maine at 8 a.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
