Men's Tennis Blanked By Shepherd in Season Opener

RAWLINGS, MD - The Frostburg State men's tennis team opened its 2004 season with a 9-0 loss to Division II Shepherd Friday evening at Rawling Heights Racquet Club.

Shepherd, which has won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and advanced to the NCAA II regional tournament each of the last two years, swept the three doubles flights by 8-3 scores before claiming all six singles matches in straight sets.

Senior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and junior Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) fell to Tim Halter and Brian Clarke at No. 1 doubles, while junior Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and senior Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) were defeated by Wray Sherman and Mike Stambaugh at the No. 2 flight.

Senior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) and junior Jake Helms (Linthicum, Md./North County) lost to Mike Farrell and Dan App at the third spot.

In singles play, Stephens fell to Halter 6-3, 6-3, at the top flight, Lyst dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Clarke at the second position and Spangenberg was blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Farrell at the third flight.

Della-Luna lost to Sherman 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, Robinson was beaten by Eric Stevenson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and Helms fell to Scott Hasenei 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6

Frostburg State returns to action March 14 when they host Davis & Elkins at 1:00 pm at Rawling Heights.
