Men's Tennis Evens Season Record With Win Over Juniata

Frostburg, MD — The Frostburg State men's tennis team won its second match in as many days today, defeating Middle Atlantic Conference foe Juniata, 6-3.

FSU junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) recorded his third victory in a row at No. 1 singles by notching a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 win over Neil Eicher.

In No. 2 singles action, sophomore Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) staged a dramatic comeback, taking the second and third sets 6-2, 6-4 respectively, after being blanked in the first by Juniata's Satoshi Kimura.

FSU seniors Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) both scored wins for the Red and Black. Ruest lost the first set to JC's Osman Homurlu 6-2 ,and then roared back to take the deciding second and third sets 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles play.

Shillinger handled Dave Bullock in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4.

The Eagles could only muster one singles victory on the afternoon when Scott Noerr defeated Bobcat sophomore Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) in a tight 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (11-9) thriller in No. 5 singles.

Frostburg State junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) insured a Bobcat victory when he won the No. 6 singles contest, taking Jack Walfish in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Ruest and Della-Luna stayed perfect on the day, winning their No.3 doubles match over Homurlu and Walfish, 8-6.

The Eagles won the No.'s 1 and 2 doubles to finish off the day's scoring when Kimura and Noerr beat Stephens and Shillinger 8-2, and Eicher and Bullock downed Lyst and Spangenberg, 8-5 respectively.

The Bobcats (2-2, 2-0 AMCC) return to action at 12:30 Thursday when they travel to Pitt-Greensburg for an AMCC match.
