Men's Tennis Opens Season With Solid Performance at W. Va. Wesleyan Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Frostburg State men's tennis team opened its season with a solid performance at the W. Va. Wesleyan Invitational held at the Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown, Saturday.

Wesleyan won the tournament with 18 points followed by Frostburg State with 10.5 points. Waynesburg was third (3) and Fairmont State was fourth (1.5).

The invitational consisted of three flights with two athletes from each school in each flight. The losers from each flight would fall into the consolation flight of the bracket while the winners advanced until a champion was crowned.

In the championships of the A consolation bracket, sophomore Greg Shedd (Middletown, Md./Middletown) defeated classmate and FSU senior Andy Chisholm (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) 9-7.

Junior Matt Chisholm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) fell in the B finals bracket to W.Va. Wesleyan’s Bryan Corder, 6-3, 6-0.

FSU junior Ryan Rice (Hampton, Va./Shape American) won the B consolation match over Waynesburg’s Drew Slater and senior Chris Schoenbauer (Riva, Md./South River) defeated WVWC’s Eric Johnson, 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles action, FSU reached the finals in all three flights. M. Chisholm and Shedd lost to Wesleyan’s Corder and Daniel Lobo in the A flight, 8-3. A. Chisholm and Rice were beaten by W.Va. Wesleyan’s Cavalcante and Jiblets, 8-2 and in the C finals, Schoenbauer and senior Brad Yoder (Hyndman, Pa./Christian Liberty Academy) defeated Wesleyan’s Johnson and Osburn 9-8 (7-5).

FSU travels to Pitt-Greensburg for the opening round of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action on March 15.
