Men's Tennis Slips Past Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, PA — Frostburg State used four singles wins to rally past host Waynesburg, 5-3, in a non-conference match Monday afternoon.

The Bobcats (12-3), who won for the ninth time in their last 10 dual matches, tangled with the Yellow Jackets in tight doubles competition.

Sophomore Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and senior Terence Killen (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) were edged by Eric Kaluza and Mike Pamepinto, 8-6, at the top flight, and seniors Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) and Dave Butler (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) fell, 9-7, to Mike Gates and Guillermo Pradera, at the second flight.

FSU got on the board when junior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) teamed with freshman Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) for an 8-6 win over Adam Fuoss and Ryan Floyd at the third spot.

The Bobcats took over in singles play, winning the top three positions. Stephens picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win against Kaluza, and Killen had little trouble with Pamepinto, 6-1, 6-1, at the second flight.

Ruest rallied for a key 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Pradera at the third position, but Gates downed Butler, 7-5, 7-5, at the fourth spot.

Shillinger dispatched Joe Murray, 6-4, 6-2, at the fifth flight to secure the win.

The sixth singles match between Spangenberg and John DeVilbiss was halted due to weather with the score 3-3 in the first set.

The Bobcats will visit Bethany (W.Va.) College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
