Men's Track and Field Wins First Annual FSU Classic

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State scored 242 points to win the First Annual Frostburg State Track and Field Classic Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium. Howard Community College was second with 38 points, while Hagerstown Community College was third with 28 points.

Freshman Manual De La Cruz (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.00, while freshmen Kevin Brown (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) and Jonathan Rozenblat (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) were third (12.14) and sixth (13.81), respectively.

De La Cruz was also fourth in the 200-meter dash in 24.38, with Brown fifth in 24.89.

Rozenblat placed third in the 400-meter run in a time of 58.93.

Sophomore Jared Boehner (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) turned in a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run in 1:59.37, while freshman Calvin Kipple (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) placed fourth in 2:25.09.

The Bobcats were solid in the distance events. Sophomore Ron Lipscomb (Lonaconing, Md./Northern Garrett) was third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:19.03, while junior Brian Gallagher (Burke, Va./East Lake Hall (Fla.)) was fifth in 4:38.26.

FSU swept the top three places in the 3,000-meter run. Freshman Ed May (Bryantown, Md./LaPlata) won the event in 9:33.74, sophomore Kevin Ripple (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) was second in 10:02.10 and Gallagher was third in 10:16.78.

In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) placed second in 16:43.27, while sophomore Mike Replogle (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) was third in 16:49.02.

Senior Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent) captured the 400-meter hurdles in 56.64, while junior Travon Morgan (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) placed second in 56.60. Both athletes qualified for the ECAC Championships to be held May 15-18 at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

Belt also added a runner-up showing in the 110-meter hurdles, posting a time of 16.93.

FSU later claimed the 4x400-meter relay in 3:36.74 and was second in the 4x100-meter relay in 46.38.

Sophomore Will Millman (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) won the pole vault with a height of 11-11.75, while freshmen Michael Dorn (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and Jonas Horst (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring) were second (19-6.25) and third (18-5), respectively, in the long jump.

Freshman Scott Smith (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) won both the shot put (35-2) and discus throw (114-6), was second in the hammer throw (109-9) and placed fourth in the javelin (107-8).

Sophomore Terrell Hayes (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) captured the hammer throw (120-6), was second in the discus throw (94-7) and sixth in the javelin (87-8).

"It was nice to have a home meet and at the same time win the First Annual FSU Classic," said Bobcat head coach Felix Moreno. "The athletes had a great time, and I anticipate this meet will get bigger in the years to come."
