New Frostburg Workshop Helps Veterans Turn Experiences Into Written Works
09/09/2016

A new weekly writing workshop for area military veterans will meet for the first time at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Frostburg State University Center for Literary Arts, 22 E. Main St. in downtown Frostburg. The workshop, which is free of charge and open to all veterans in the Western Maryland region, is designed to help veterans transform their military experiences into written works.

“Many military service members and veterans struggle with the transition from service to civilian life,” said Danielle Dabrowski, FSU’s director of veterans services. “I hope these workshops will serve as a positive outlet for our veterans here at FSU and those living in nearby communities.”

Frostburg’s weekly writing workshop will provide a place for interested veterans to regularly meet, learn to translate their difficult experiences and emotions onto the page and explore their written creations with fellow veterans of America’s military conflicts.

The veterans workshop will be conducted by Gibb Cochrum, a native of Western Maryland who teaches English courses at FSU.

Attendees need no previous writing experience. Cochrum will offer writing prompts to help guide novice writers through the creative process. The workshop will meet every Tuesday through Dec. 6, and will resume next spring.

This workshop series has been made possible through an FSU Foundation Opportunity Grant.
