O'Brien Caps Season with AFCA All-America Honors

WACO, TEXAS — Frostburg State University senior defensive linemen George O'Brien (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) capped his collection of postseason honors on Monday when he was named to the prestigious 2002 American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches' All-America Team.

O'Brien is one of just 25 players voted to the Division III squad and is the 10th Frostburg State player to earn such honors in school history.

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all four of its divisions. The teams are the only squads chosen exclusively by the coaches themselves.

O'Brien, one of four defensive lineman voted to the squad, led the Bobcats with 89 tackles and tied for the Atlantic Central Football Conference lead with 9.5 sacks this season.

He also tied for second on the FSU squad with 20 tackles for loss and added an interception, a pass break up, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

O'Brien has also be named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southwest Football All-Star Team, the All-Atlantic Central Football Conference first team and Football Gazette All-South Region third team.

Additionally, O'Brien was one of just 15 Division III players selected to compete in the Second Annual East Coast Bowl featuring mostly Division II athletes, and he was a member of the Division III United States all-star team that defeated Mexico, 15-9, in the 2002 Aztec Bowl played last Saturday in Torreon, Mexico. O'Brien recorded three tackles in the victory.
