Routzahn Leads Women's Track & Field to Fourth-Place Finish at Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Freshman Anna Routzahn (Frederick, Md./Frederick) won the high jump and junior Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) and sophomore Jennifer Waskiewicz (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) added runner-up showings in the 800-meter run and weight throw, respectively, to help lead the Frostburg State women’s track and field team to a fourth-place showing out of eight teams at the Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships Saturday at Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center.

Christopher Newport scored 215 points to win the women’s title. Mary Washington was second with 68 points, Trinity (D.C.) was third with 48 points and FSU was close behind with 46 points. Salisbury (35), Methodist (27), Gallaudet (13) and Catholic (12) rounded out the field.

Routzahn continued her impressive rookie campaign, winning the high jump with a mark of 5-4. She will participate in both the ECAC and NCAA Championships in March.

Finch placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.78, while Waskiewicz was second in the weight throw with a distance of 40-8.25. Waskiewicz will join Routzahn at the ECAC Championships.

Finch was also sixth in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 1:03.00, and Waskiewicz added a 10th-place showing in the shot put with a throw of 31-1.75.

Senior Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) paced the FSU distance runners, finishing fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:34.33 and fifth in the 1,500-meter run in a personal-best 5:15.99.

Sophomore Chelsea Lewis (Indianapolis, Md./Pike) finished fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.73 seconds and was also 10th in the 200-meter dash in 28.49

Freshman Bonnie Axman (Burke, Va./Robinson) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run in a personal-record 19:21.06, while sophomore Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was 11th in a personal-best 20:57.32.

Sophomore Laura Knight (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 9-6.

Freshman Amanda Clayton (Frederick, Md./Linganore) was sixth in the 800-meter run (2:35.32) and 10th in the 400-meter dash (1:05.67), while freshman Sheila Kurtz (Thurmont, Md./Boonsboro) was 10th in the 800-meter run in a personal-record 2:43.87.

Freshman Andrea Dickerson (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) finished eighth in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, with times of 28.19 and 1:04.49, respectively. She also finished ninth in the long jump (14-9) and ran a 7.84 in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash. All of her marks are personal bests.

Freshman Tiffany McPhatter (Lanham, Md./Central) was ninth in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.39 and finished 15th in the 200-meter dash in a personal-record 29.32.

Junior Michelle Lange (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) enjoyed a solid meet, finishing ninth in the triple jump (27-11), 12th in the long jump (13-9) and 19th in the 200-meter dash in 31.17. She established personal bests in both the triple jump and 200-meter dash.

The Bobcat relay teams were also strong. Dickerson, Finch, Sauder and McPhatter teamed for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (4:23.73), while Axman, Finch, Kilkus and Kurtz combined to place fifth in the distance medley (14:16.99).

"We were extremely competitive, and we are continuing to develop as a team," said third-year head coach Felix Moreno. "We had several athletes establish personal records, and we are looking forward to sending three or four people to the ECAC Championships."

Frostburg State will compete in the NYU Invitational this Friday as well as the George Mason University Last Chance Meet Sunday.
