Ryan Sets School Record in 200 Backstroke at West Virginia Wesleyan Tri-Meet

BUCKHANNON, WV — The Frostburg State men's swimming team earned a split while the women's squad was swept in a tri-meet with Grove City and host West Virginia Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

The Bobcat men downed West Virginia Wesleyan, 54-40, but fell to Grove City, 55-40. The FSU women were defeated by West Virginia Wesleyan, 55-24, and Grove City, 82-12.

The men used six wins to power past West Virginia Wesleyan.

Senior Kelly Ryan (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel), senior Jay Garner (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard), sophomore Kevin Nolan (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and sophomore Jay Mayden (Baltimore, Md./Arlington Baptist) opened with a victory in the 400 medley relay (3:43.53).

Garner then captured the 200 freesyle in 1:52.83 and later sealed the win with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (2:18.14).

Ryan and Nolan added wins in the 200 and 50 freestyles, respectively, while sophomore Brian Flynn (Bridgewater, Conn./Shepaug Valley) took home the 100 freestyle in 52.04.

The Bobcats came up short against Grove City, getting five wins, including Ryan's school-record 2:00.57 in the 200 backstroke.

The Wolverines had six victories and seven runner-up finishes to pull out the win.

On the women's side, FSU captured three events against West Virginia Wesleyan. Junior Siona Walsh (Twin Falls, Idaho/Bellows Free Academy, Vt.) won the 200 backstroke in 2:41.64 before senior Laura Jacquette (Tolchester, Md./Kent County) claimed both the 500 freestyle (7:24.80) and the 100 breaststroke (3:00.85).

Walsh led the Bobcats against Grove City with runner-up finishes in the 50 (27.94) and 100 freestyles (1:02.54) and a third-place showing in the 200 backstroke.

The Bobcats return to action in the Grove City Invitational Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1.
