Several Bobcat Harriers Shine at Maryland Championships

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Several members of the Frostburg State men's and women's cross country teams turned in strong showings at the Maryland Collegiate Championships held Saturday at Anne Arundel Community College.

Both squads finished second behind Salisbury University in the Division III standings. Team scores were not provided.

Freshman Sy Farris (Fort Ashby, W.Va./Frankfort) was FSU's top male performer, finishing 31st out of 114 runners in a time of 27:18. Fellow freshman Kevin Ripple (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) was close behind, placing 33rd overall in 27:24.

Sophomore Brian Gallagher (Burke, Va./East Lake Hall (Fla.)) turned in one of his best performances, finishing 36th with a time of 27:42.

Freshmen John Densmore (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Justin Marshall (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) were 46th and 48th, respectively. Densmore finished in 28:10, while Marshall's time was 28:11.

Freshman Ron Lipscomb (Loncaconing, Md./Northern Garrett) ran a 28:27 to finish 58th, and sophomore Tim Watson (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) completed the FSU scoring, placing 81st in 30:04.

On the women's side, sophomore Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) paced the Bobcats with a 23rd-place showing out of 87 runners in a time of 21:36.

Junior Inga Olsen (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) was 34th (21:54), while sophomore Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) was 41st (22:20).

Sophomore Julie Hoffman (Parkton, Md./Parkton) turned in a time of 24:10 to place 62nd, and junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) finished 82nd in 31:09.

"Brian and Beth ran the races of their college careers," said FSU Head Coach Randy Lowe. "Katy Eads and Justin Marshall also ran extremely well."

Frostburg State will return to action in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships to held October 20 at Beaver Falls, Pa.
