Softball Drops Doubleheader to Penn State Altoona

ALTOONA, PA — Penn State Altoona used a strong offensive performance to sweep an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader from visiting Frostburg State Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took the opener, 11-1, before posting a 12-4 victory in game two.

In the opening contest, the Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first.

Sophomore Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) led off with walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett). Senior Krissy Jackson (Frostburg, Md./Beall) then drilled a double to scored Zych.

Penn State Altoona (13-5, 6-0 AMCC) countered with two runs in the home half of the inning to move in front for good. The Cougars scored twice in the third to take a 4-1 lead before blowing the game open with a seven-run fourth.

Cougar sophomore hurler Amanda Rourke held the Bobcats to four hits on the afternoon to earn the victory, while Vance (2-4) took the loss after allowing 11 runs on 12 hits.

Jackson led FSU in the opener with a pair of doubles, while Foor added two singles.

In the second game, the Bobcats again took the lead in the opening inning before the Cougars answered back.

FSU (4-7-1, 1-2-1) built an early 2-0 lead when Jackson drilled a two-run double in the first. However, Penn State Altoona scored four times in the bottom of the first and never trailed again.

The Bobcats closed to within 4-3 in the third on an RBI-single by freshman Raelee Casazza (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), but the Cougars answered with a run in the home half of the inning and pulled away with a three-run fourth.

FSU got a run back in the fifth on an RBI-single by sophomore Lora Thomas (Bowie, Md./Bowie) before Altoona scored four more times in the bottom of the inning to end the contest due to the eight-run rule.

Rourke continued to handcuff Bobcat hitters in the nightcap, allowing six hits in picking up the victory. Casazza (2-3) took the complete-game loss for FSU.

Foor paced the Bobcats in game two with a pair of doubles, while Jackson also added a double.

Frostburg State returns to action on Sunday when it visits Lake Erie for another AMCC doubleheader beginning at noon.
