Softball Earns Sixth-Straight Win With Sweep of Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) earned a pair of wins as the Frostburg State softball team captured its sixth-straight win with a sweep of Pitt-Greensburg Thursday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

FSU (12-8, 8-0 AMCC) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to take game one 2-1, and held UPG (4-18, 3-5 AMCC) to just two hits in the nightcap to win 2-0. With the victories, Frostburg State remains perfect in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.

Cook allowed one run and two hits in the first inning of the opener but settled down after that, striking out 11 batters and giving up just two singles the rest of the game.

In the home half of the first, FSU threatened with runners on second and third with two outs. However, Pitt-Greensburg starter Ashley Gardner ended the inning with a strike out as UPG led 1-0.

The game went hitless until the bottom of fourth when senior Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) led off the inning with a single to left field. The next batter, senior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), smashed her second homerun of the season over the center field fence giving FSU a 2-1 lead.

Pitt-Greensburg had two runners on in the seventh, when Cook fielded a ground ball and threw the runner out at first to end game.

Seyler was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Seyler got the start in the nightcap, pitching 3.0 three innings while giving up two hits. Cook threw 4.0 innings in relief, holding UPG hitless, while fanning eight. She earned her league-leading 12th win of the season.

Senior Jessica Smith (LaVale, Md./Allegany) scored a run in the second inning to give FSU a 1-0 lead. Frostburg State added a run to its lead in the fifth inning when Smith singled to center field scoring sophomore Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County).

Smith led the hosts going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

FSU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts rival Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
