Softball Earns Split With Pitt-Bradford

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Pitt-Bradford Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 in the opener before rebounding with an 11-3 win in the second game.

In game one, Heather Nelson scattered four hits and struck out six in the complete-game victory.

The Panthers (8-10, 5-3 AMCC) gave her all the run support she would need, scoring five runs in third with help from three Bobcat errors.

Frostburg State (7-8, 1-3 AMCC) got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when freshman Jessica Smith (La Vale, Md./Allegany) drew a one-out single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Raelee Casazza (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and scored on a single by junior Marsha Moats (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown).

The Bobcats threatened in the fifth when freshman Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Smith hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Freshman Katie Nelson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) then reached on a two-out error to load the bases, but Heather Nelson induced a ground out to end the inning.

Heather Nelson, who hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, retired the final six Bobcats in order to secure the win.

Katie Nelson (3-4) allowed four earned runs and struck out two in the complete-game loss.

In the second game, the Bobcats fell behind 3-0 but scored 11 unanswered runs to earn their first conference victory.

Pitt-Bradford opened the scoring in the third on an RBI-ground out by Sarah Kokanovich and an RBI-single by Nikki Spindler.

The Panthers added another run with two outs in the inning when a throw by Bobcat catcher Ashley Martin (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) sailed into centerfield allowing the runner from third to score.

The Bobcats rebounded in the bottom of the inning, scoring five times to take the lead for good.

Sophomore Kristy Sipes (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) singled to start the frame, and one out later, Moats drew a walk. Junior Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, Md./Guilderland) then reached on an error to load the bases, and freshman Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) followed with a single to make it a 3-1 game.

Martin then reached on an infield single to plate Moats, and freshman Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) hit another single to score Zych.

Junior Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett) then put FSU on top with a two-run single.

Pitt-Bradford threatened in the top of the fourth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but FSU turned in two great defensive plays to hold the Panthers off the scoreboard.

Bobcat sophomore pitcher Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) cut down a runner at the plate on a comebacker to the circle for the second out, and the Bobcats executed a perfect first-and-third cut play, as Zych chased down a runner before she could reach the plate.

Brown gave FSU breathing room with a three-run home run in the fourth, and the Bobcats scored three more times in the sixth to end the game early due to the eight-run rule.

Martin had an RBI-double and Foor added a two-run single to make it an 11-3 final.

Martin finished 3-for-4 with a double, Moats was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Brown finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Foor was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Vance allowed two earned runs on eight hits and struck out two to improve to 3-3 on the season.

"Katie pitched another great game in the opener, but we simply didn't back her up," said FSU head coach Chris Starke. "Our hitting returned to form in game two, and our pitching and defense was excellent as well. We continue to work hard and make progress each day."

The Bobcats will host La Roche in a crucial AMCC doubleheader on Monday at 3:00 pm.
