Softball Ends Losing Skid With Sweep of Penn State Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Frostburg State softball team ended its four-game losing streak with a sweep of Penn State Altoona, Tuesday afternoon at Ivyside Athletic Field.

Senior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) struckout 15 batters as FSU (17-13, 11-5 AMCC) downed PSA (7-13, 5-11 AMCC) 4-2 in game one. In game two, the Bobcats pounded out 14 hits to outscore the Lions 7-1.

Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored on a Penn State Altoona error. The visitors took a 3-0 lead in the second when senior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and sophomore Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) each scored on Lion errors.

In the third, Penn State Altoona narrowed its deficit to 3-1 on a bases-loaded walk. PSA cut the Bobcat lead to one, 3-2, in the fourth, after scoring a run on the only Bobcat error of the contest.

FSU closed out the scoring in the seventh when Baldwin singled home sophomore Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder).

Cook tossed 7.0 innings allowing just two runs on five hits. Baldwin led the team with two hits, one run and one RBI.

Cook started game two as well, tossing all seven innings allowing just one run on four hits. She struckout eight batters while earning her 17th win of the season.

In the second inning, FSU captured a 1-0 lead when Savoye doubled home Baldwin. In the fifth, the Bobcats added three runs to their lead. Senior Jessica Smith (LaVale, Md./Allegany) had a two-run single and Baldwin had an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Lions scored their only run of the game in the sixth to make the score 4-1. However, Frostburg State put the game away in the seventh when senior Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and freshmen Lydia Ratliff (Brandywine, Md./Grace Brethern) and Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) each recorded RBIs.

Baldwin again led the squad with two hits, two runs and an RBI.

FSU returns to action on Wednesday, April 26 when its hosts La Roche for doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
