Softball Gets Swept at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Frostburg State dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Bridgewater, 11-1 and 8-3, Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field.

In the opener, the Eagles (12-9) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch and infield throwing error.

The Bobcats (5-8) cut their deficit in half with a run in the third. Junior Bethany Seyler (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) led off with a single and later scored on a single by junior Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll).

Bridgewater blew the game open with seven runs on nine hits in the bottom of the inning and tacked on two more in the fourth to cap the scoring. The game ended after four and half innings due to the eight-run rule.

Lisa Rhodes allowed one run on seven hits and struck out five to earn the victory. Junior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) took the loss after giving up 10 hits and seven earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Jennifer Hall and Amy Childs both went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Eagles, while freshman Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) was 2-for-3 for the Bobcats.

In the nightcap, the teams battled through two and a half scoreless innings before Bridgewater took control with five runs in the bottom of the third. The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate and used six hits and an error to spark the outburst.

FSU got on the board in the top of the fourth when sophomore Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) bunted for a base hit and scored on a double by Brown. Baldwin then walked to put runners on first and second with none out, but Bridgewater worked out of the jam.

The Eagles opened a 6-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI-triple by Emily Anderson, but the Bobcats would not go quietly, plating two in the sixth.

Senior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) singled to left and moved to second on an error, and Potts followed with a walk. Brown then singled to score Boswell, and Potts later scored on a fielder’s choice followed by an infield throwing error.

Bridgewater answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Lindsey Ware went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Lori Smith went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in for the Eagles.

Brown led FSU, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Potts was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

Marlo Powell picked up the win by allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five in five innings.

Junior Shannon Sturtz (Middletown, Md./Middletown) took the loss after giving up 11 hits and six runs – but just three earned – in five innings.
