Softball Runs Winning Steak to Six with Sweep of Mt. Aloysius

FROSTBURG, Md. — Frostburg State swept an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader from visiting Mt. Aloysius by scores of 21-1 and 13-1 Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

Both games ended after four and a half innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Bobcats extended their win streak to a season-high six games and improved to 16-11 overall and 11-1 in the AMCC. The Mounties fell to 0-20 overall and 0-16 in conference action.

In the opener, Frostburg State scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, using a three-run homer by junior Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) and an infield single by junior Krystal Dixon (Westminster, Md./Westminster) to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Bobcats blew the game open with seven runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River).

FSU then added 10 more in the third to build a 21-0 lead. Freshman Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) had a pair of RBI singles and junior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) drove in two more runs with a bases-loaded walk and a single.

Mt. Aloysius scored its lone run in the fourth on a fielder's choice by Stacey Hammond.

Junior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) retired all nine batters she faced to pick up the victory and improve to 7-5 on the season. She fanned four to increase her FSU single-season record for strikeouts to 71, and she also extended her scoreless innings streak to 20.

Brown finished 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, a walk, five RBIs and three runs scored, while Dixon was 3-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and three runs scored.

In the nightcap, FSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Cook and an infield single by junior Meredith Remus (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air).

The Mounties cut their deficit in half when Hammond drilled a lead-off homer in the second, but the Bobcats used six hits and four Mt. Aloysius miscues to plate nine runs in the home half of the second to open an 11-1 cushion. Seyler smacked a three-run double to the left centerfield fence to highlight the outburst.

Dixon added a two-run double in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Junior Shannon Sturtz (Middletown, Md./Middletown) allowed two hits and one run while striking out five in three innings to earn the win. She is now 4-5 on the year.

Sophomore Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) allowed just one hit over the final two innings of relief.

Cook went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while Seyler was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Senior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) went a combined 3-for-7 with two walks, four runs scored and two RBIs in the final regular-season home games of her career.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they visit La Roche in a showdown of the top two teams in the AMCC starting at 3 pm. The Redhawks are 22-4-1 overall and lead the league with a 13-1 mark.
