Softball Splits in Non-Conference Doubleheader With Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - In its first doubleheader of the spring season, Frostburg State split with Shenandoah, losing game one 10-2 but rebounding to take game two, 2-0.

In the loss, FSU (3-3) gave up four runs in the third inning and six runs in the sixth as the game was called after six innings. The win was the first SU (1-5) this season.

The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third when senior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) singled home freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach).

The Hornets answered in the bottom half of the inning when Catherine Beurle smacked a three-run double for a 3-1 lead. She later scored when Lauren Wall reached base on an FSU error.

Frostburg State narrowed the gap in the fifth to 4-2. Junior Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Frederick CC)) led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Filipowicz ground out. She later scored when freshman Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) tried to steal second.

In the sixth, Shenandoah added six runs to put the game out of reach. Wall and Kristen Templeton each recorded two-run singles to help the outburst.

Senior starter Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) took the loss for FSU after tossing 5.0 innings allowing nine runs, six earned, on nine hits while striking out three. Amanda Lekki earned the win, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Filipowicz was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Bobcats while Griswold was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats scored one run in the third and one run in the seventh to outpace the hosts 2-0.

Freshman Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) pitched a complete game (7.0 innings) shutout scattering eight hits while fanning three.

Seal scored the Bobcats lone run in the third. She led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on an infield single. She scored when junior Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) reached base on an error.

Frostburg State tacked on a run in the seventh for a 2-0 spread. Freshman Lindsay Freitag (Baltimore, Md./Parkville), who entered the game as pinch runner for junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) after a single at the start of the inning, scored from second on a junior Heather Proud (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany (Allegany) single to left.

Macintosh was 2-for-4 while Proud was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Seal was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Bobcats return on Wednesday, March 14 when they travel to Bridgewater for a doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
