Softball Splits on Opening Day of Ferrum Tournament

FERRUM, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team split on the opening day of the Ferrum Tournament Saturday afternoon. FSU lost to Division II Ohio Valley, 6-2, but rebounded to defeat Emory and Henry in the nightcap, 4-1.

After two and half scoreless innings, the Bobcats (3-3) took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the third. OVC rebounded in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

Frostburg State tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but the Fighting Scots took control with one run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh.

Senior Jessica Smith (LaVale, Md./Allegany) led the Bobcats at the plate going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, Emory and Henry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. FSU captured a 2-1 advantage after scoring two runs in the fourth, and further widened its gap by adding one run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Smith was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bobcats while freshman Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Senior pitcher Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) tossed 5.1 innings allowing one run while striking out four earning her third win of the season. Junior Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) pitched 1.2 innings recording three strikeouts to pick up her second save on the year.

FSU returns to action tomorrow when they face Ferrum at 11:00 am.
