Softball Splits Twinbill With Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - Frostburg State won game one on its way to a split with Hood Tuesday afternoon.

FSU (24-16) broke a 1-1 tie with one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to win the opener 3-1. HC (24-14) rebounded in the nightcap scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 2-1 win.

The Bobcats got on the board first, when junior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) scored on a senior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) RBI single.

Hood tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the third inning when Tamara Maggard singled home Mandi Lambert. However, FSU took the lead for good in the top of the fourth when freshman Lydia Ratliff (Brandywine, Md./Grace Brethern) doubled to left center allowing classmate Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) to score.

The Bobcats made the score 3-1 in the fifth on a solo homerun by sophomore Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County).

Senior pitcher Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) earned her 23rd win of the season after tossing 7.0 innings giving up one run on four hits while fanning six. Seyler led the team going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

In game two, Kara Robert singled home Jen Jones to give HC a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The game remained that way until the seventh when Griswold doubled home senior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) to tie the contest at one apiece.

In the bottom of the inning, Maggard crossed the plate on a Jones single as Hood pulled out the dramatic 2-1 win.

Cook suffered the loss tossing 6.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out four. Seyler, Wagner and sophomore Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) each recorded two hits for the Bobcats in the nightcap.

FSU returns to action on Friday when it travels to Penn State Behrend to take on the Lions in the double-elimination portion of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament.
