Softball Sweeps Hood on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. - Seniors Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) stole the show, Tuesday afternoon, as Frostburg State swept Hood in non-conference softball action, 4-1 and 10-1, on senior day.

In the regular season finale for both squads, FSU finishes 16-18 while Hood finishes 11-19.

Potts earned the win on the mound in game one and drove home a combined three runs on two hits. She pitched 7.0 innings allowing just three hits and one run while striking out eight while earning her seventh win of the season. She was also 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored.

Griswold went a combined 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored a triple and her first career homerun.

Hood came out of the gates swinging in the first inning of the opener recording two of its four hits and plating one run. Jamie Bussey singled to center scoring Sara Wastler for the Blazers only run.

In the second, junior Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) singled down the left field line to lead off the inning. After a sac bunt moved her to second, freshman Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) singled to left center scoring Baldwin as FSU tied the game at 1-1.

Three innings later, the Bobcats assumed a 4-1 lead with three runs. Griswold tripled home freshman Lindsay Freitag (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) for the first run of the inning. Freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) singled and classmate Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) reached on a fielder’s choice and both scored when Potts doubled to right center.

Jamie Gardner took the loss for the visitors allowing all four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings.

In the nightcap, Frostburg State broke out with a 10-run first inning on its way to a 10-1 win.

Griswold started the inning with a single to left and after back-to-back walks put her on third, she scored on a single by sophomore Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County). Junior Heather Proud (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany (Allegany)) then singled home classmate Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Frederick CC)) and Baldwin scored on an error to account for the first three runs.

The next batter, freshman Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown), then doubled to left center plating junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack), Proud and Wagner for a 7-0 lead. Coffey later scored an error by the Hood outfield and Griswold capped the inning with a two-run shot over the center field fence.

The Blazers scored their only run of the ballgame in the top of the fifth when Kate Hassell plated Sara Wastler on a ground out to second.

Coffey earned the win for the Bobcats after scattering nine hits and allowing just one run. Kara Robert suffered the loss for Hood allowing all 10 runs in just 0.1 innings of work.

FSU is back in action on Friday when it faces Medaille in the opening round of the AMCC Tournament at 10:00 am.
