Softball Sweeps Penn State Behrend for Fifth Straight Win

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State extended its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats outslugged the Lions for an 11-9 win in game one and then completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.

In game one, both teams scored early and often before the Bobcats finally prevailed. After spotting the Lions a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, FSU (18-9, 5-1 AMCC) responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Krystal Dixon (Westminster, Md./Westminster) got the Bobcats on the board with a RBI-single, and freshman Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) put FSU ahead for good with a two-run double.

FSU added three more runs on a single by sophomore Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and two PSB errors.

The Lions (6-22, 5-5) pulled to within 6-5 in the second, but FSU answered again with five runs in the home half.

Dixon drove in a run with a groundout, sophomore Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Savoye laced back-to-back RBI-singles, and senior Lindsey Secrest (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) laced a two-run double to cap the outburst.

Penn State Behrend added a run in the third, two runs in the fourth and one more run in the seventh.

Dixon, Potts and Savoye each had two hits and two RBI.

Senior Andria Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) went the distance for the Bobcats, allowing 14 hits and four earned runs while striking out five and walking two. She improved to 9-5 with her 13th complete game of the year.

"The opener was one of those wild games in which both teams hit the ball all over the place," said FSU head coach Chris Starke. "We got great production out of the bottom half of our lineup and settled down in the latter part of the game."

In game two, Potts (9-4) scattered just five hits and allowed only one earned run in her eighth complete game of the season, and senior Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run double in the fifth to lead FSU to the win.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when junior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) led off with an infield single and scored on a two-out double by sophomore Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll).

Penn State Behrend moved in front 2-1 in the third with help from a pair of FSU errors, but the Bobcats pulled even in the bottom of the inning as Secrest doubled and later scored on a single by Zych.

In the fifth, Secrest led off by reaching on an infield error and moved to second on a single by Boswell. Sophomore Jess Smith (La Vale, Md./Allegany) then reached on an error to load the bases, and Zych drilled an 0-2 pitch into right center to clear the bases.

Potts, who retired the final nine batters she faced, won for the sixth time in her last seven decisions.

Boswell was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Zych was 2-for-3 and tied her career high with four RBI.

"Pottsy was on from her first pitch, and Wes Landrum, our pitching coach, called a great game," Starke added. "Bos did an outstanding job setting the table at the top of the lineup, and Zych came through with a big hit in a key situation."

The Bobcats return to action Sunday when they visit La Roche for another AMCC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
