Softball Takes Down La Roche in AMCC Tournament Opening Round

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State won the first two games of a best-of-three series against La Roche on Saturday in the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Softball Tournament.

FSU (21-15) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the opener, 4-3. In game two, senior starter Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) struckout 11 batters and held LAR (20-15) to just three hits while FSU escaped with a close 1-0 victory.

The Bobcats advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and face host and No. 1 seed Penn State Behrend (31-7) on Friday, May 5.

In game one, the Redhawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Amanda Bressler scored on a Bobcat error. FSU rebounded to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when senior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and freshmen Molly Bryden (Rock Hall, Md./Kent County) and Lydia Ratliff (Brandywine, Md./Grace Brethern) all scored on La Roche errors.

In the seventh, LAR tied the game on another FSU error and a Dina Macchia RBI double.

Savoye started the Bobcat rally in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single. After a sacrifice bunt advanced her to second, Bryden singled to the gap between first and second allowing Savoye to score the game-winning run.

Cook earned the win tossing 7.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits while fanning nine. Savoye led the Bobcats with two hits while Bryden had the only Bobcat RBI.

In game two, Frostburg State scored the game’s only run in the first inning when senior Jessica Smith (LaVale, Md./Allegany) doubled home sophomore Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack).

In the sixth, sophomore Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) reached on a fielder’s choice and Savoye reached on an error, and both later advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. However, Baldwin would later be thrown out at home and Redhawk starter Bethany Peracchino used a ground out to second to escape the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Vanessa Inks led off with a single and later advanced to third on a FSU error. The next batter, Jenna Bibey, grounded back to the pitcher allowing the FSU defense to catch Inks between third and home. Inks was tagged out by Savoye after failing to make it back to third base in time. The final batter for the Redhawks struckout to end the contest.

Cook earned her 21st win the of the season throwing all 7.0 innings allowing just three hits while striking out 11. Smith led FSU with two hits, a double and an RBI.

FSU returns to action on Monday when it travels to Mary Baldwin for a doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
