Swimming & Diving Splits with Marymount in Home Finale

FROSTBURG, MD — The Frostburg State swimming and diving teams earned a split with visiting Marymount in the Bobcats' home finale Friday afternoon at Bobcat Natatorium. The Bobcat men posted a 131-67 victory for their second straight win, while the FSU women fell, 106-79.

In men's action, the Bobcats (5-3) started with a victory in the 200-meter medley relay as sophomore Ben Marrapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright), senior Jay Garner (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard), sophomore Kevin Nolan (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and sophomore Ryan Kentrus (St. Leonard, Md./Patuxent) turned in a time of 1:58.32.

Marymount (2-6) took a 17-16 lead with a 1-2 showing in the 800-meter freestyle before FSU pulled away with six first-place finishes.

Sophomore Jay Mayden (Baltimore, Md./Arlington Baptist) turned in a time of 2:02.48 to win the 200-meter freestyle, and sophomore Brian Flynn (Bridgewater, Conn./Shepaug Valley) followed with a victory in the 50-meter freestyle in 26.20.

Garner then claimed the 200-meter individual medley in 2:18.40 before Nolan took home the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:02.19.

Flynn posted his second individual win of the afternoon by capturing the 100-meter freestyle in 59.04, and Ryan posted a 1:10.72 to win the 100-meter backstroke. Garner added his second individual victory in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.72), and Flynn and Mayden teamed with freshmen Patrick Serrano (Olney, Md./Blake) and Matt Marrapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) to win the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:52.41).

In exhibition diving, sophomore Andrew Mlynarski (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) posted 166.60 points, while sophomore Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent) set a personal record with 159.80 points.

On the women's side, Marymount (2-6) won the first five events to open an early lead before cruising to the win over the Bobcats (2-6).

Junior Jessie Bley (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park) won the 100-meter freestyle in 1:05.08, and junior Siona Walsh (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) followed with a victory in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:18.57.

Senior Alex Morrison (Toms River, N.J./Toms River), freshman Stephanie Carrigo (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key), freshman Kim Kaiser (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and freshman Melody Hanna (Frostburg, Md./Beall) teamed to win the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:15.61.

In diving action, junior Cindy Reese (Westminster, Md./Westminster) posted a career-best 214.0 points, just 15 points shy of the six-dive school record set by Julie Thorton in 1986.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, January 23 at Bethany (W.Va.) beginning at 5:30 p.m.
