Swimming and Diving Improves on Day Two of the AMCC Championships at the Grove City Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. — On day two of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference swimming and diving championships at the Grove City Invitational, the women’s team moved up to seventh place overall and third in the AMCC, while the men jumped to sixth place overall and second in the conference.

For the men, junior Brandon Thorton (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills (Howard CC) and freshmen Matt Horton (Centerville, Va./Westfield), Scott Gantz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake), and Griffen Williams (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) placed seventh overall and third in the AMCC in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.76.

Individually, Williams took 11th place overall and first in the AMCC in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:49.90), while junior Will Cross (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) finished 16th and 4th in the AMCC (11:58.53) in the same event.

Gantz recorded a first-place finish in the AMCC and 13th overall in the 400-yard individual medley (5:08.73) while Thorton crossed the finish line 16th overall and third in the AMCC in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.84).

The men also recorded a seventh-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:09.76), which was good enough for third in the AMCC. The team consisted of Cross, junior Nate Haugh (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley), Williams, and Gantz.

For the women, freshman Thirza Roberto (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) took home three, second-place AMCC finshes. She recorded one in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.78), another in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.58) and the last on the relay team in the 800-yard freestyle (8:47.57).

Also on that relay team were junior Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and sophomores Mindy Yost (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) and Michelle Nash (Columbia, Md./Hammond).

Also for the Bobcats, Dunnigan took first in the AMCC and fourth overall in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:20.36) while Yost recorded a 13th overall finish and second in the AMCC in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.88).

Frostburg State wraps up the meet on Saturday.
