Swimming and Diving Wraps Up Regular Season with a Sweep Over Altoona

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams came away with victories over Penn State Altoona in the final meet of the regular season. The men won 131-80, while the women dominated 109-77.

The victory provides the Bobcats with some momentum, as they will head into the AMCC Classic/Grove City Invitational before the National Division III Championships.

The women were again paced by freshman Kristin Moats (Loudoun County/Leesburg, Va.) who came away victories in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:23.75 and in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.19. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team that recorded a time of 2:09.50.

Freshman Chris Williams (Baltimore City College/Baltimore, Md.) and junior John Mayden (Arlington Baptist/Baltimore, Md.) led the men as Mayden won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.64) and he won the 100-yard freestyle (50.37). Williams also won two events, the 50-yard freestyle (22.67) and was a member of the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.00). He also finished second behind Mayden in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.57, only two-tenths of a second behind.

Other winners for the Bobcats were senior Siona Walsh (Bellows Free Academy/Twin Falls, Idaho), sophomore Kim Kaiser (Severna/Severna Park, Md.) and sophomore Melody Hanna (Beall/Frostburg, Md.) who were teamed with Moats in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Heather Hamor (Lackey/Nanjemoy, Md.) won in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:49.01). Walsh was also victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (28.59) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.83). Hanna was also a winner in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.70). Senior diver Cindy Reese (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) was again a winner from the 1-meter board (224.95).

Juniors Jeff Cameron (Mt. Saint Joseph/Columbia, Md.) and Ben Marrapodi (C. Milton Wright/Bel Air, Md.), along with freshman Williams and Jay Ferrari (Riverhill/Columbia, Md.) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.00). Freshman Sean Leaman (Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Bethesda, Md.) won the 1000-yard freestyle (11:23.78). Ferrari was also victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (55.37). Junior Greg Barnhart (Damascus/Damascus, Md.) won the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.29).

The victory for the men improves their record to 6-4 and the women’s team also moves to 6-4 while extending their winning streak to 5 in a row.

Frostburg State University now looks ahead to the AMCC Classic/Grove City Invitational on February 20-22, 2003 before they compete at the Division III National Championships in March.
