Swimming Splits with York in Season-Opening Meet

YORK, PA — The Frostburg State swim teams split their season-opening meet with York College Friday evening, as the Bobcat men won 113-92, while the women fell, 139-57.

On the women's side, junior Jessie Bley (Ft. Washington, Md./Gwynn Park) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 12:17.90 and finished second in the 500 freestyle in 6:00.27.

The Bobcats 200 freestyle relay team of Bley, senior Lauren Crystal (Baltimore, Md./Atholton), sophomore Laura Finley (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and junior Siona Walsh (Twin Falls, Idaho/Bellows Free Academy, Vt.) won in a time of 1:51.26.

Freshman Jessica Shelhorse (Damascus, Md./Damascus) had a strong debut, placing second in both the 200 freestyle (2:15.05) and the 100 backstroke (1:11.55).

On the men’s side, senior Kelly Ryan (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) and sophomore John Mayden (Baltimore, Md./Arlington Baptist) each won three events.

Ryan started his day by winning the 50 freestyle in 22.20 seconds, just .5 shy of the school record, and he later set a school record in winning the 100 backstroke in 54.76, shaving .28 off his previous best.

Mayden won the 500 freestyle in 5:14.81 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.51.

Ryan and Mayden then teamed with freshman Matt Marapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) and sophomore Brian Flynn (Bridgewater, Conn./Shepaug Valley) to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.66.

Flynn added a victory in the 100 freestyle (52.46), while junior Matt Brew (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) won the 1,000 free in a time of 12:14.23.

Sophomores Kevin Nolan (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and Ben Marrapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) also posted victories in the 200 freestyle (1:56.98) and 200 IM (2:10.65), respectively.

"I think the teams swam very well, considering how early we are in the season,” said Head Coach Chip Villarreal. “We are swimming in mid-season form with most of our swimmers, and I think this bodes well to continuing along with great training and great swims. We have lots to be happy about, and we’ll be in great shape for the rest of the season."

The Bobcats return to action when they visit Salem International University on November 3 in Salem, W.Va.
