Swimming Swept by Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, PA — Both the Frostburg State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost to Washington & Jefferson in dual-meet action this past Saturday. The Bobcat men were defeated 137-89, while the Bobcat women fell 110-79.

Junior Chris Williams (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) enjoyed an outstanding day, winning a pair of individual events and helping the 200-yard freestyle relay team finish second.

Williams qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 21.63 seconds. His time was just .03 seconds shy of the FSU school record of 21.60 set by John Crocker in 1993.

Williams also won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.50 and joined freshman Tommy Spencer (Frostburg, Md./Beall), sophomore Tom Sandor (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) and senior Billy Spencer (Frostburg, Md./Thomas Johnson) for a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.13.

Junior Steve Ramsey (Olney, Md./Magruder) won the 3-meter diving with 123.35 points and placed second in the 1-meter diving with 104.80 points, while freshman Paul Foley captured the 1-meter event with 148.25 points. Sophomore Kyle Meyer (Clifton, Va./Centreville) finished second in the 1-meter event with 122.30 points.

Junior Brendon Craig (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:15.07.

On the women’s side, freshman Stephanie Deming (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:31.80, while freshman Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:48.97 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:50.05.

Freshman Julie Groetzinger (La Vale, Md./Bishop Walsh), junior Heather Hamor (Nanjemoy, Md./Lackey), junior Kristin Moats (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and senior Melody Hanna (Frostburg, Md./Beall) teamed to place third in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:35.47.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, November 13 at Salisbury beginning at 2:30 pm.
