Tennis Splits Pair of Matches

Frostburg State men's tennis split a pair of matches in a busy day of action today. The Bobcats began the day by defeating Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Penn State Behrend 6-3. FSU lost a close 5-4 decision in the day's second match against Grove City College of the President's Athletic Conference.

FSU junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett), riding an impressive 12-game win streak at No.1 singles, notched his 13th straight victory in a three-set thriller over Behrend's Ryan Deimel, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomore Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) beat Mike Oey 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles.

Bobcat senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) took command of the third set early and cruised to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Jacob Hillman in the fourth flight.

The Lions evened the match at 3-3 after winning the No.'s 3, 5 and 6 singles matches.

But Frostburg salted away the match by sweeping the doubles matches and upped it's AMCC record to 3-2 on the season.

Stephens and Lyst defeated Deimel and John Marini in the No. 1 spot 8-1. Frostburg State junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) teamed with Shillinger at No. 2 doubles to down Oey and Hillman 8-4 to insure the win.

Sophomore Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and senior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) defeated Jon Barber and Aaron Whiting 9-8 (9-7) in the last match of the morning.

FSU did not fair as well in the afternoon session. Grove City junior Patrick Donahue denied Stephens his 14th consecutive win, taking No.1 singles 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Lyst, Shillinger and Della Luna all won their singles matches and once again the Bobcats found themselves in a 3-3 tie heading into the doubles.

This time only Stephens and Lyst could muster a victory against the 10-1 Wolverines as Grove City secured the victory.

The Bobcats (9-6, 3-2 AMCC) return to action at 3:00 pm Tuesday when they travel to Goucher for a non-conference match.
