Track & Field Squads Impressive at Slippery Rock Open

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA — The Frostburg State University men’s and women’s track and field teams posted impressive performances at the Slippery Rock University Open last Saturday.

On the women's side, freshman Bonnie Axman (Burke, Va./James Robinson) and Anna Routzahn (Frederick, Md./Frederick) were strong.

Axman won the 5,000-meter run in 19:58.99, using an aggressive final two laps to take the lead.

Routzahn, who qualified for the national championship meet in the high jump in FSU's season-opening meet at West Virginia University December 6, continued to excel, clearing 5'4 to capture the event.

Freshman Amanda Clayton (Frederick, Md./Linganore) was once again impressive in the 400-meter dash, finishing second in 1:06.84.

Freshman Andrea Dickerson (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) placed fifth in the 55-meter dash (8.18) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (29.63), while freshman Tiffany McPhatter (Lanham, Md./Central) was fifth in both the 200-meter dash (29.63) and the 400-meter dash (1:07.42).

Senior Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) was fourth in the 3,000-meter run (12:04.69), and sophomore Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (21:25.93).

The 4x400-meter relay team of Clayton, McPhatter, Sauder and Dickerson placed third in 4:31.68.

On the men's side, junior Brian Bonn (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and senior Tyque McCarthy (Bowie, Md./Central) enjoyed strong performances.

Bonn won the 800-meter run (2:03.39), while McCarthy won the 55-meter dash (6.75) and finished second in the 200-meter dash (24.13).

In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Ed May (Bryantown, Md./La Plata) placed third (16:37.83), and sophomore Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) finished sixth (17:03.23).

The 4x400-meter relay team of junior Ron Lipscomb (Avilton, Md./Northern Garrett), McCarthy, freshman Bryan Powers (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Bonn was third (3:44.91).

"Overall, both teams ran well, but there is room for improvement," said Bobcat head coach Felix Moreno. "We are looking forward to working hard in the coming weeks to improve our chances at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships February 21."

Frostburg State will compete next in the Penn State University Invitational January 31 in State College, Pa.
