Track & Field Teams Begin Season with Strong Showing at WVU Holiday Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Both the Frostburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their indoor seasons at the West Virginia University Holiday Invitational Saturday. The Bobcats received solid performances against a field primarily composed of Division I programs.

On the women’s side freshman Sumer Rohrs (Frostburg, Md./Forest) had a nice collegiate debut as she set a school-record with a time of 9.08 in the 60-meter hurdles which also qualifies as an NCAA provisional time, third in the 200-meter dash with an Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifying time of 26.88 and seventh in the 60-meter dash (8.05) which also qualified her for ECAC.

Sophomore Adrienne Raiford (Capitol Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) had a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 7.83 in the 60-meter dash and placed fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.92)

Senior Chelsea Lewis (Hagerstown, Md./Pike) qualified for ECAC with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash (8.02) and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (27.13)

Sophomore Jessica Clingan (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) finished in fifth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.34, sixth place in the 800-meter run (2:39.42) and tenth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.98)

Freshman Grace Reed (Washington, D.C./Benjamin Bannekar) placed 12th in the 60-meter dash (8.21), 16th in the 200-meter dash (28.08) and 21st in the 400-meter dash (1:09.27)

The team of Clingan, Raiford, Lewis and Rohrs finished in fifth place in the 4X400-meter relay with a time of 4:13.91.

Senior Jenn Waskiewicz (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) placed 12th in the weight throw with a toss of 11.70 meters.

On the men’s side, sophomore David Cheeks (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) placed third with an ECAC qualifying time of 7.09 in the 60-meter dash and missed earning a spot at the NCAA national meet by .03. Classmate Arien Heggs (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) also qualified for the ECAC in the same event with a time of 7.10.

Cheeks also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.11. Sophomore Kevin White (Reisterstown, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) finished right behind in third place with a time of 23.15. Freshman Tade Turton (Pittsville, Md./Riverside) placed tenth (23.61), Heggs 14th (24.29), senior Teddy Levine (Miami, Fla./Fryeburg, Maine) 23rd (25.11), freshman Nicholas Schiefelbein (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) 30th (25.75) and freshman Steven Flanagan (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) 33rd (26.26) in the same event.

Cheeks also led the Bobcats in the 400-meter dash finishing third in 51.59, while White placed sixth (51.87).

Senior Brian Bonn (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) finished second in the 3000-meter run in the time of 9:13.04.

The 4X400-meter relay team of Turton, Cheeks, Bonn and White finished fourth with a time of 3:36.49.

“This meet was impressive for us in comparison to last years performance,” said Heach Coach Feliz Moreno. “After 10 week of rigorous training, both teams are showing great promise for what is to come.”

Frostburg State returns to action on Decmber 11th when it travels for a meet at Robert Morris University.
