Track and Field Enjoys Strong Season-Opener at WVU Invitational

MORGANTOWN, WV — Junior K.O. Gray (Bowie, Md./Southern) set a school record in the 300-meter dash and junior All-American Dante Myles (Hyattsville, Md./Archbishop Carroll) won the 55-meter dash to highlight several impressive season-opening performances by the Frostburg State track and field teams at the West Virginia University Holiday Classic Saturday at Laidley Field.

Gray, who posted a time of 35.26 to win his heat and place third overall, broke Tim Street's former mark of 35.44 set in 1983.

Myles bested a field of Division I and II athletes to win the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.36, only .05 seconds shy of Joe Barber's school record of 6.31 set in 1987.

Myles, who ran a 6.39 qualifying time, was also fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.90) and 10th in the 300-meter dash (36.10).

The Bobcat men also received several solid performances in the field events.

In the triple jump, sophomore Derell Quick (Clinton, Md./McNamara) was fourth (13.64m), sophomore Travis Bouldin (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) finished fifth (13.06m) and sophomore Michael McGreevy (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) placed sixth (13.01m).

Bouldin and McGreevy were also fifth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump. McGreevy added a ninth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.14 meters.

On the women's side, junior All-American Ria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) finished sixth in the 55-meter dash in 7.27, just .05 shy of her own school record she set last year.

She was also 11th in the 200-meter dash in 27.38.

Junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler), who transferred from Hagerstown Community College, enjoyed an impressive debut, placing 10th in the 300-meter dash in a time of 42.77, just .17 seconds shy of the school record set by Gail Brown and Vicki Proctor in 1985.

Both the men's women's 4x400-meter relay teams finished 11th. The men posted a time of 3:32.85, while the women ran a 4:20.10

"Our athletes were anxious to get that first meet out of the way," said first-year head coach Felix Moreno. "Most of the schools there were Division I programs, and we really stepped up to the challenge. This gives us an indication of what we need to do over the break to get ready for the rest of the season."

Frostburg State returns to action on January 26 in the Fifth Annual Bucknell University Bison Open in Lewisburg, Pa.
